The Child and Youth Advocate Act
The Child and Youth Advocate Act was proclaimed April 1, 2012. The legislation sets up the Advocate as an independent officer of the Legislature. It also expands the role of the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate, and increases its investigative responsibilities.
The Act also clarifies the publication ban measures that protect the privacy of children in the child intervention system. For example, public bodies may share a child’s personal information if it’s in the child’s best interest.
In addition, the Act sets up a new Child and Family Services Council for Quality Assurance, under the Ministry of Human Services. The Council helps increase public understanding and confidence in the province’s child intervention system.
