Persons Case Scholarship

The Alberta Persons Case Scholarship was established in 1979 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the "Persons Case." These scholarships honour the efforts of five Alberta women - Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby and Henrietta Muir Edwards - who fought and won the right for the women of Canada to be officially deemed "persons" under the law.

The deadline for applications is September 30.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • be a resident of Alberta for three years immediately prior to enrolment, and
  • be a full-time student at an Alberta post-secondary institution approved by the Students' Finance Board.

Selection Procedures

In selecting scholarship recipients, the Selection Committee will consider each applicant's:

  • program of studies,
  • academic achievement, and
  • personal essay.

Students whose studies will ultimately contribute to the advancement of women, or who are studying in fields where members of their gender are traditionally few in number are encouraged to apply.

The value of each scholarship typically ranges from a minimum of $1,000 up to a maximum of $10,000.

The following items must be attached to your application:

  • an official transcript, and
  • a short essay of two or three pages: outline why the issues you are studying are important to you and how your studies, activities and community involvement contribute to the advancement of women.

It is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure that their application is complete and received by the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund by September 30. Applicants will be notified of the result of the competition by December 1.
