Assembly of Co-Chairs
Responsibilities
The role of the Assembly of Co-Chairs (the Assembly) is to benefit Alberta's children by providing a strategic governance focus to support and enhance the work of the Child and Family Services Authorities. The Assembly, in conjunction with the department, works to meet the needs of Alberta's children in a spirit of mutual respect and support.
The Co-Chairs are responsible for reporting back to their boards on discussions and decisions made at the Assembly meetings.
Structure
The Assembly is comprised of the Co-Chairs from each of the ten CFSAs.
The Chairpersons (or Chairs) of the Assembly are comprised of one Aboriginal and one non-Aboriginal Co-Chair. The terms for the Chairs are staggered, and an election is held each year to elect one of these positions for a two-year term.
The Minister, Deputy Minister and other members of the Senior Management Team are invited to a portion of every meeting. This provides an opportunity to share information and discuss key issues/concerns.
CEOs are also invited to attend a portion of the meeting when items to be discussed have particular relevance to them. CEO and Ministry Executive Team (MET) meetings are scheduled to coincide with Assembly meetings in order to facilitate CEO attendance at both forums.
The Assembly has created committees to assist in carrying out its functions. Current Assembly committees are the Provincial Aboriginal Advisory Committee, Board Development Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and the Community Engagement Committee.
Board Resources and Development staff provide executive and administrative support to the Assembly and its committees.
Meetings
The Assembly meets quarterly -- usually in March, June, September and December. Meetings usually take place in Edmonton.
Assembly Handbook
The Assembly Handbook is designed to facilitate the work of the Assembly of Co-Chairs. The handbook includes the strategic goals, roles and expectations, decision-making procedures, and information regarding committees of the Assembly.
The material contained in the Assembly Handbook was developed by the Assembly of Co-Chairs during the first year of operation, and has been revised in accordance with decisions made at subsequent meetings.
